Assault & Beret (Hat Shop Mystery #5) by Jenn McKinlay

Jenn McKinlay remains one of my very favorite cozy authors. I have never been disappointed by her, and I have read every single book by her as soon as it was avaliable. When, Assault & Beret (Hat Shop Mystery #5) by Jenn McKinlay, hit my reading stack it didn't even sit there a whole day.

From the back of the book:

Allons-y to Paris for more hats and homicide from the New York Times bestselling author of Copy Cap Murder!

London milliner Vivian Tremont and her American cousin and partner, Scarlett Parker, tip their caps to their beloved shop on Portobello Road in Notting Hill and set off for Paris, where Viv can’t wait to teach a hat-making class. But she has another reason to travel to the City of Light: to find the man she impulsively eloped with years ago and have their marriage annulled.

William Graham is not only handsome and charming, but he also has a glamorous job as an insurance investigator who works with priceless pieces of art, most recently a small Renoir that has been discovered in a junk shop. But when both Will and the masterpiece suddenly disappear, it’s up to the ladies from London to follow the trail of clues. They’ll need to hold on to their chapeaux, however, because someone is a master in the art of deception.

My thoughts:

I had a blast with Vivian and Scarlett as they ventured to Paris. I told you last time how much I related to Scarlett and that was still true. It was like seeing an old friend, and this time we got to go to a new place. Jenn McKinlay has a way of creating characters that I care about and that amuse me. Even the secondary characters here were awesome. I really had fun with Harry.

They mysteries were fun and paced perfectly. As usual I loved the tone. There is a natural wit to this author's voice that lightens in the right places and lets up in tense places. She has a very deft pen. The reveal as usual was gripping and surprising. I will be keeping my eyes out for the next part. Grab this one and any you see by Jenn McKinlay, you really can't go wrong with her.

Third Time's a Crime (A Love Or Money Mystery #3) by Diana Orgain

I think I mentioned the last time I talked about this series that I love reality TV! The TV show set up in, Third Time's a Crime (A Love Or Money Mystery #3) by Diana Orgain, sounded like a show I would have watched actually.

From the back of the book:

After two hit reality TV shows brought ex-detective Georgia Thornton into America’s living rooms, audiences can’t get enough of her quest for love and justice. Now producers have come up with an all-new show set in a haunted castle in Golden, California. Georgia and nine other contestants will need to solve the mystery of a teenage girl who disappeared at the castle in 1960.

Except there’s one rather substantial problem waiting for everyone when they arrive: one of the contestants is found drowned at the bottom of the castle’s empty pool. Now Georgia and the other contestants will need to work together, because there’s a different sort of game afoot—and it’s not one they can afford to lose.

My thoughts:

As with the last part there was a hardcore show must go on feeling here. Poor Georgia is a trooper! She had some things happen that would have sent most contestants packing. Speaking of Georgia, it was great to see her and Scott again. I love the them together and won't give any spoilers as to what happens there. I know last time I loved another romantic interest, but he had an accent, and I can be flighty.

There was a whole lot of mystery to solve, I didn't, but I had fun trying. There was the cold case premise of the show as well as some fresh cases that were tossed their way that only Georgia seemed interested in solving, plus some strange goings on in the castle. I had a lot of fun reading this and really look forward to the next one.

Better Off Thread (An Embroidery Mystery #10) by Amanda Lee

I love a holiday themed themed book this time of year, especially when it is part a series I already adore. Better Off Thread (An Embroidery Mystery #10) by Amanda Lee, is the newest part in a charming series that I always enjoying visiting.

From the back of the book:

Santa finds himself in a stitch of trouble in the tenth in the series from the national bestselling author of The Stitching Hour...

Marcy is busy helping her customers make hand-crafted ornaments at her embroidery shop, the Seven-Year Stitch. But despite the yuletide bustle, when her friend Captain Moe asks for her help, she can’t refuse—especially when the favor is to play the elf to his Santa for sick children at a local hospital. Despite the ridiculous outfit, Marcy finds herself enjoying spreading cheer—until the hospital’s administrator is found murdered.

Although the deceased had plenty of people willing to fill her stocking with coal, evidence pins the crime on Moe. Now it’s up to Marcy, with the help of her police officer boyfriend Ted and her Irish Wolfhound Angus, to stitch together the clues to clear Moe’s name—before someone else winds up crossed off Santa’s list for good.

My thoughts:

You may recall I started this series at part eight and fell instantly in love with the characters and storytelling. I have caught up now with back parts, though if you want to start here that would work, as each part holds it's own full mystery with a start and finish. Now that I have been back and watched all of the characters grow and evolve I love them even more. Marcy is awesome and seeing her playing an elf in this part made me giggle.

You know I am a crafter, so the broader theme and setting is a plus, and I loved hearing about the projects her and her customers were working on. I did figure out the mystery, there were a lot of reasonable suspects and it was very well written and paced. Even the odd characters, and suspects were written with humor and added a lot to the story. This made a great weekend read.

Spouse on Haunted Hill (A Haunted Guesthouse Mystery #8) by E.J. Copperman

You may remember last year when I started this series at part seven. I have been lucky enough to find the rest of the parts and was totally caught up and ready for the newest, Spouse on Haunted Hill (A Haunted Guesthouse Mystery #8) by E.J. Copperman.

From the back of the book:

Alison’s shady ex needs to use her haunted guesthouse as a hideout in the latest from the national bestselling author of Ghost in the Wind.

Where Alison Kerby’s ex-husband goes, trouble follows. This time, unfortunately, he’s brought that trouble right to her doorstep. On the run from a business deal gone bad, Steven, aka “the Swine,” owes some scary people a staggering sum of money. No need to panic, though. He has a plan: sell Alison’s Jersey Shore guesthouse to pay them off.

Before Alison has a chance to read Steven the riot act, he disappears—after a mysterious man trailing him ends up full of bullet holes. Now the police are next to darken her doorway. For all his faults, Steven is still the father of Alison’s daughter, so with the help of ghosts Maxie and Paul, Alison sets out to find her ex and clear him of the murder. But if the bad guys get to him first, he may not have a ghost of a chance.

My thoughts:

It was much fun to be back at the guesthouse with the living as well as the ghost guests. Now having been caught up with all the prior parts, I had an even stronger bond with Alison and Melissa, as well the ghosts, especially Dad. It was even interesting to get to see The Swine some more. I love that the relationships are real and not perfect.

I loved the way the mystery helped to explore the past with the ex and there were enough possibilities to keep me guessing. I didn't solve this before the reveal, but I think that was because I was so drawn into the story that I wasn't puzzling over it too much. I had a lot of fun and can't wait for the next part.

The Ghosts of Misty Hollow: A Ghost of Granny Apples Mystery (A Ghost of Granny Apples Mystery #6) by Sue Ann Jaffarian

As much as I love paranormal cozies I'm surprised that The Ghosts of Misty Hollow: A Ghost of Granny Apples Mystery (A Ghost of Granny Apples Mystery #6) by Sue Ann Jaffarian was my first in this series. I am however happy to say it was fantastic.

From the back of the book:

The author of Ghost in the Guacamole returns as a spiritual medium and her spectral sidekick encounter murder and mystery in a Massachusetts farmhouse—

Mysterious plots abound when spiritual medium Emma Whitecastle offers aid to a famous novelist, but her spectral sidekick Granny Apples will help her write all the wrongs...

Bestselling crime writer Gino Costello is working on his next book in a historic farmhouse in the heart of Massachusetts. His story features some paranormal elements so he’s invited family friend Emma to provide her input as a medium. But as soon as Emma arrives—with her boyfriend, Phil, and Granny Apples in tow—that’s when the real trouble begins.

Emma is immediately contacted by the Browns, a family of ghosts who originally owned the house in the early nineteenth century. They need Emma to help them locate the spirits of their two children who disappeared. Meanwhile, a dead body appears at the house. Now Emma, Granny, and Phil must read between the lines to find answers before a killer books it...

My thoughts:

Since this was the first part I read in this series I can say with full confidence it is stand alone and you don't need to read any others to enjoy it. I would like to go back and spend more time with the characters and see their development though, because there several that I really loved. Emma and Phil especially. Gino was also a joy and I'd love to see him again.

The ghosts, Granny in particular, add something interesting to mystery solving. The family of ghosts gave Emma a bit more than a murder to deal with as she tried to figure out what happened to the two missing children. The real time murder was interesting and I wasn't able to pin it down too far in advance, only just before the reveal did I settle on the right name. I will be looking forward to more parts and in the meantime reading the prior parts.

Prose and Cons (A Magical Bookshop Mystery #2) by Amanda Flower

It's time for, Prose and Cons (A Magical Bookshop Mystery #2) by Amanda Flower. Well, tomorrow it's time! I was so excited to get an early peek at this. As with the first part I simply adored the story. How could I not? It combines my two favorite themes: magic and books.

From the back of the book:

Magic, books, and cats collide in a village near Niagara Falls in the latest mystery from the author of Crime and Poetry...

In Cascade Springs, New York, Violet Waverly and her grandma, Daisy, are the proprietors of Charming Books, where the power of the written word is positively enchanting...

October in Cascade Springs means tourists are pouring in for the annual Food and Wine Festival, and Daisy hopes to draw those crowds to the store. She asks Violet and the local writing group, the Red Inkers, to give a reading of the works of Edgar Allan Poe on the shop’s front porch to entertain the revelers. Everyone eagerly agrees.

Yet their enthusiasm is soon extinguished when Violet discovers one of the writers dead in the shop moments before the event. After the shop magically tells Violet she’ll need to rely on Poe’s works to solve the murder, she enlists the help of her trusty tuxedo cat, Emerson, and the shop’s crow, Faulkner. But they must act fast before someone else’s heart beats nevermore.

My thoughts:

It was great to be back with Violet and Daisy in their wonderful bookstore where you don't pick your book, but it picks you. That idea makes my heart smile.I loved the inclusion of Poe's works to help with the mystery, as he is one of my favorites. The sheriff is still stunning and still one of my favorites. Of course I should also mention the cat, Emerson, who I adore.

The descriptions make it easy to immerse into the story and I loved the tone. At points I was amused, even though it is a mystery there were some giggle out loud parts, which is always great. Like with the first part, I was surprised by who it was and I even liked them. Well, as before I liked them when I didn't know they were a killer. This was a beautifully written story and I can't wait to read the next part. Don't hesitate to get your copy tomorrow.

Frosty the Dead Man (Snow Globe Shop Mystery #3) by Christine Husom

This time last year I told you about a most adorable series based in a quaint curiosity shop. I am so happy to say it's time for the next part, Frosty the Dead Man (Snow Globe Shop Mystery #3) by Christine Husom. I hope you took to the time get caught up because this one was just as much fun.

From the back of the book:

A snow globe becomes a murder weapon in the latest cozy mystery from the national bestselling author of Snow Way Out and The Iced Princess.

Mayor Lewis Frost has always been known as Frosty to his friends—not that he has many these days. Controversies swirling around the city council have members wondering if Frosty is trying to snow them. After one councilman storms off in a huff, the mayor turns to curio shop manager Camryn Brooks and asks her to consider taking a seat on the council.

Later, when Cami goes to his office to discuss the proposal, her blood runs cold. She finds Frosty dead, and the very snow globe she sold him earlier that day lies in sparkling shards on his carpet—along with a large diamond. Does the snow globe—which features a peculiar tableau of an armed man and three menacing bears—hold a clue to Frosty’s demise? One way or another, it’s up to Cami to shake things up before the killer’s trail goes cold...

My thoughts:

It was great to be back with Cami and Pinky, and Mark, and Clint. Those are my favorites, but the entire cast is extremely sweet. Well, most of them, there was obviously a killer and few people who were a little frosty as well. I really also like Clint for Cami, he is a well written romance interest with enough quirks to make him endearing.

The mystery was clue based and I solved it! I love when that happens. There was a bit more to it than just a murder and that helped me to figure it out actually. What is really neat is that in the back there is a craft to make a snow globe! I love snow globes and will be making it this holiday season. This will be available December 6th so you still have time to grab the other parts and get caught up if need be.

Dead, Bath, and Beyond (Victoria Square #4) by Lorraine Bartlett

It always excites me to find a new author and series I can jump into. I'm not sure how I missed Lorraine Bartlett for so long, but I sure am glad I had the chance to read, Dead, Bath, and Beyond (Victoria Square #4) by Lorraine Bartlett.

From the back of the book:

The New York Times bestselling series is back, as Katie Bonner—owner of Artisans Alley in the quaint shopping district of Victoria Square—attempts to solve a murder at a nearby B & B.

Katie Bonner feels like nothing can spoil her perfect day off, sailing Lake Ontario with her good friend, lawyer Seth Lander. Then she runs into her ex-boss Jake on the dock. It was never smooth sailing with Jake, and Katie is only too happy to get away from him as he makes a scene.

Unfortunately, the next day her unpleasant former employer is found drowned in a bathtub at a bed and breakfast in Victoria Square. Who would pull the plug on Jake? When an autopsy reveals lake water—not bath water—in his lungs, Katie quickly finds herself in over her head. She’ll need to race to find the killer before her business and her freedom both go down the drain.

My thoughts:

This was my first visit to Victoria Square and I easily feel into the story and felt like I was with friends. Katie is a fun sleuth and the people surrounding her are so sweet and fun to read. I didn't have any problems starting right here and connecting with them.

There were a lot of suspects because Jake wasn't so nice and there was some other reasons that I will leave you to read. I did like the layers and the reveal was intense. I mean, wow, talk about having a bad night. I don't want to spoil the fun because I never saw that sort of high intensity ending coming. I'm glad Katie was okay, I was worried about her for a minute.

In the back you will find some yummy recipes. I enjoyed this part enough that I have to go back and read the rest while I hope the next one is in the works.

Crime and Catnip (Nick and Nora Mysteries #3) by T.C. LoTempio

I am so happy to bring you back for another visit with Nick and Nora, the most usual mystery sleuthing duo. Crime and Catnip (Nick and Nora Mysteries #3) by T.C. LoTempio is the third part in a most endearing series that has a spunky heroine and feline hero. He is sure to wrap his furry tail around your heart.

From the back of the book:

Nick and Nora aren’t just pussyfooting around this time as they deal with a missing person’s case and murder.

While catering a gala for the Cruz Museum, Nora Charles agrees to look into the disappearance of director Violet Crenshaw’s niece, a case previously undertaken by her frisky feline friend Nick’s former owner, a private eye whose whereabouts are also currently unknown.

As Nora and her curious cat Nick pull at the string of clues, they begin to unravel a twisted tale of coded messages, theft, false identities, murder, and international espionage. Nora dares to hope that the labyrinth of leads will not only help them locate the missing young woman, but also solve the disappearance of the detective. That’s if Nora can stay alive long enough to find him.

My thoughts:

As with the other parts, it really is all about Nick for me. I believe I said it before that without Nick, no mystery would get solved. This has the same humor as the other parts and the same love triangle that is still trying to work itself out. No, not Nick, if it were, he'd win paws down. Nora is filled with her usual willful spunk and thankfully Nick is there to bail her out when she gets in over her head. We all need a cat like that. I don't think my Sam would brave killers like Nick does.

The mystery in this one had several layers. There was a theft and a murder and the continuing mystery of where Nick's original owner owner, Nick, is. I did like that they got some answers on that one this time and they were really awesome answers. I figured out the thief, not the motive, and not the murder, so I feel pretty good. We can't all be as smart as the cat.

This releases December 6th so if you read as fast me you have ample time to catch up! Did I mention a tasty sandwich recipe is in the back.

A Likely Story (Library Lover's Mystery #6) by Jenn McKinlay

Last week saw the paperback release of A Likely Story (Library Lover's Mystery #6) by Jenn McKinlay. I jumped into this series late, and was so happy with it that I went back read not only all the parts to it, but to the other series available from Jenn McKinlay. As you might imagine, I was tickled to read this latest part and devoured it in a night.

From the back of the book:

A new hardcover in the Library Lover's mystery series from the New York Times bestselling author of On Borrowed Time. Small-town librarian Lindsey Norris must solve a murder and a missing person's case involving two reclusive brothers.

NOT HIS BROTHER'S KEEPER

Delivering books to the housebound residents of the Thumb Islands, just a short boat ride from the town of Briar Creek, library director Lindsey Norris has befriended two elderly brothers, Stewart and Peter Rosen. She enjoys visiting them in their treasure-filled, ramshackle Victorian on Star Island until she discovers that Peter has been killed and Stewart is missing. Now she's determined to solve a murder and find Stewart before he suffers his brother's fate.

My thoughts:

Since I went back and got caught up, I can really appreciate all the character nuances and see their growth. That said you may jump into this series at any point. All of the cast are a lot of fun. I even enjoy Ms. Cole. I missed seeing Robbie for most of the book and I'm still on the fence about Sully, since, well, he isn't Robbie.

The mystery was fun, I especially liked the hoarding aspect and the collectors. There was good attention to detail that made it easy to visualize that part of the story. The traps made a interest touch as well.Plus the story added some to the history of the people in the town, or on the islands. I had some of the mystery figured out, but it didn't play exactly as I thought, so I'll say I almost solved it.

In the back of the book there were the usual fun notes, crafts, and delicious recipes, plus a surprise bonus story. I loved the extra peek into what may be coming. Speaking of what may be coming, there was an excerpt of the next part which also just released, this one in hard back, so you can grab that too, after you read and loved this part! I look forward to my next visit with Lindsey.

A Killer Kebab (Greek to Me Mystery #3) by Susannah Hardy

You know I love my food themed series. And it's always fun to pay a visit to a series I have enjoyed in the past. In fact, before this part released, since I enjoyed part two so well, I made the time to read part one. A Killer Kebab (Greek to Me Mystery #3) by Susannah Hardy, was a great installment in a series that I have really enjoyed.

From the back of the book:

The new Greek to Me Mystery from the author of Olive and Let Die and Feta Attraction

The Bonaparte House is closed for the season, and Georgie Nikolopatos looks forward to fixing up the Greek restaurant and historic landmark—until her renovation plans hit a fatal snag.

With her divorce underway, her mother-in-law returning to Greece, and the tourists gone, Georgie finally has life under control—and the Bonaparte House to herself. She quickly hires a contractor for some much-needed renovations to reopen in time for a special Greek-style Thanksgiving meal. Georgie is suspicious though when former dishwasher Russ Riley arrives with the construction crew. He still has an ax to grind with the Nikolopatos family—but is it sharp enough to kill?

When Georgie finds the body of her divorce lawyer amid the construction debris and Russ is quickly arrested for murder, something about the case doesn’t add up. While Georgie is no fan of Russ, even a bad egg deserves a crack at justice.

My thoughts:

I really loved getting to see Georgie again. Jack stayed off screen and thus the romance was missing, but what wasn't missing was the attention detail that I loved in the other parts. There are a lot of interesting bits tossed in throughout the story, about a wide range of things I had no clue about, from road chemicals used in snow, to history of old recipes, and even a note in the back that further explains about the Thousand Island recipe.

The mystery was well paced and so wound around characters that it was hard to guess. In fact as it revealed I thought I had it right, but then it revealed even more and I realized I didn't. Plus there was way more involved than a simple murder plot, which is always nice. The family mystery seems like it might be at its end, or will it? I look forward to seeing where this series goes now and to trying the recipes in the back.

Twice Told Tail (Black Cat Bookshop Mystery #6) by Ali Brandon

It always makes me sad when a series I love comes to an end, but on the other hand I am so happy for the stories I was able to share with the characters. So it is with mixed feelings I tell you about the six and final part in a series I adore, Twice Told Tail (Black Cat Bookshop Mystery #6) by Ali Brandon.

From the back of the book:

The New York Times bestselling author of Plot Boiler takes us back to Pettistone’s Fine Books, where Hamlet the cat isn’t the only shadowy figure lurking around the Brooklyn brownstone…

As Thanksgiving approaches, Darla Pettistone is preparing for the busiest shopping season of the year. They’ve recently launched their online store, where one anonymous bidder is offering a suspiciously high price for an antique book—and Darla doesn’t need Hamlet’s special senses to know that something isn’t quite right.

However, there’s no time to think about that after Darla’s roped into helping bridezilla Connie Capello get ready for her big day. After looking at wedding dresses, Darla and Connie head to an antique store to find her “something old”—but they find someone dead instead. When Darla learns that the shop carried a copy of the book that her mysterious bidder is after, she suspects she’ll need Hamlet’s help to discover who penned the poor soul’s final chapter, before someone else is read their last rites.

My thoughts:

I really have come to love Darla, and Hamlet. Hamlet had my heart from word one. I hung on every word of this story, knowing they would be the last. There were some things that really shocked me, and I wish I could see more of in other parts, like Reese and Connie and Jake's date toward the end. However, I'll just creatively fill in the blanks as I see fit.

The mystery was well paced and so sad. I was heartbroken by who the victim was. Hamlet as is usual had a hand in leading Darla's thoughts in the right direction, even if she didn't solve it. He is such a smart kitty. I am proud to say on this parting mystery I did figure it out. There was a clue that should allow anyone who is paying attention to nail it, but it's not so in your face that it spoils the fun for anyone.

This releases today, I hope you will pick up your copy and make a final visit with Darla and her friends.

Deck the Hallways (Fixer-Upper Mystery #4) by Kate Carlisle

I love this time of year, and all of the festive things that start appearing, that includes holiday setting being injected in my favorite cozy mysteries. Deck the Hallways (Fixer-Upper Mystery #4) by Kate Carlisle, is the latest installment in one of my favorite series and has such a sweet holiday feel. (Yes, even with a murder)

From the back of the book:

The latest mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Crowned and Moldering.

Someone's been slayed! If contractor Shannon Hammer can't nail the real culprit in the St. Nick of time, her dad will wind up in the clink...

Even at Christmastime, Shannon is more spackle than sparkle, which is why she leaps at the chance to transform a grand old Victorian mansion into ten charming apartments for homeless families. Filled with the spirit of the season, all of Lighthouse Cove turns out to help—including her best friends, a troupe of far-from-angelic Santa Claus impersonators, and her father, Jack.

But their merriment is soon dashed by a heated scuffle between Jack and the miserly president of the bank who’s backing the project. When the man is murdered, all eyes are on Jack, and visions of prison time dance in Shannon's head. Now, she needs to pull off a crime-solving miracle, before her father’s Christmas goose is cooked.

My thoughts:

It was great to be back with Shannon, her crew, friends, and dad.I know last time I mentioned having a thing for Eric, I still do. Yes Mac is sweet, and sexy, but Eric, he is perfect. I look forward to seeing how that all plays out. I really loved the holiday theme, the charity project and the Santa Brigade.

With the victim being so charming, not, the list of suspects was huge. I never doubted Jack was innocent, I love Jack. I also never guessed who it was, but then neither did Shannon, so I don't feel too bad. I thought it was a refreshing change from the usual cozy formula that Shannon wasn't snooping and drilling everyone. The reveal was surprising and satisfying and the wrap up was so sweet. I look forward to the next installment and recommend you grab this when it releases tomorrow.

Hooking for Trouble: A Crochet Mystery by Betty Hechtman

I am forever grateful to Betty Hechtman for being not only the first cozy mystery author I read, but also being the reason I dug into what is now my favorite genre. It's hard to believe the series I started with is already on part eleven. From my experience with this author, it is easy to believe that Hooking for Trouble: A Crochet Mystery by Betty Hechtman reads just as fresh and exciting as the first part.

From the back of the book:

Molly Pink can’t help seeing a pattern of trouble in the latest mystery from the national bestselling author of Seams Like Murder.

The Tarzana Hookers’ Yarn University has been a big success, and the classes have drawn in a slew of new crochet devotees. A less welcome arrival is the boxy monstrosity in the yard behind Molly’s house. She hasn’t met her new neighbors, but when she sees a couple struggling on the balcony and later spies what looks like someone lying on the ground, Molly wastes no time calling in her ex, homicide detective Barry Greenberg.

To Molly’s shock, Barry reports that nothing is amiss with her neighbors and asks her to lay off with the amateur detecting. Molly knows she wasn’t just seeing things, but with no body to prove her case she’ll have to unravel the evidence on her own—because someone in Tarzana is tangled up in murder.

My thoughts:

I know I've said this before, but the characters of this series are my friends. I was so happy to see Molly again and get the chance to celebrate a special birthday with her. I loved that Barry, Molly, and Mason, still have such a wonderful tension between them. It's amazing that I have been in both the Mason and Barry corners at different times, that reflects how well the triangle is written. CeeCee and Adele were a joy as always, and Molly's mom was back too. Everyone was back.

I thought the fact that there was some doubt as to if there was actually a murder added a neat layer. The mystery was fun, and while I hadn't settled on the killer, they were on my shortlist, so I would guess some of you will get it. I thought the kid's detective set added such a fun little bit. Touches like that make this series so sweet. The only downside is I read these so fast, and then I have to wait so long for the next part. There is a fun pattern and recipes in the back as well.

Again I will say, you can't go wrong with Betty Hechtman. Jump in here on November 1st or even better take the time between now and then to start at the beginning.

The Good, the Bad and the Guacamole (A Taste of Texas Mystery #2) by Rebecca Adler

At the start of the year I told you about a fun new series and now as the year draws to a close I am excited to see the second part, The Good, the Bad and the Guacamole (A Taste of Texas Mystery #2) by Rebecca Adler, will be available on November 1st.

From the back of the book:

Tex-Mex waitress and part-time reporter Josie Callahan is about to serve up some Lone Star justice in this spicy Taste of Texas Mystery from the author of Here Today, Gone Tamale.

Tourists are pouring into the town of Broken Boot for the annual Homestead Days celebration. Opening the festivities at Two Boots Dance Hall is smooth-talking country singer Jeff Clark, the ex-boyfriend of Patti Lopez, Josie’s best friend. When the charming Clark woos Patti onstage in an attempt to rekindle some sparks with his old flame, Josie fears her friend will end up just one more notch on the singer’s guitar strap.

To impress her editor at the Broken Boot Bugle, Josie and her Chihuahua Lenny pursue the singer to Patti’s house, hoping for an interview. Instead, they discover Clark facedown in a bowl of guacamole with a bloodied guitar at his side. With Patti suddenly a murder suspect, Josie must use her reporter skills to find out who had a chip on their shoulder—before the killer double-dips.

My thoughts:

Welcome back to the most Texas-ish cozy series ever. It was so much fun to see all the characters again and watch dynamics that started in part one deepen. This time the romance was even more subtle, letting the mystery take main stage. Josie’s humor was really ramped up this time. I simply loved, and cracked up laughing at the over the top use of similes.

The mystery was interesting, and there were a good amount of suspects and twists to keep me guessing. I did not solve it, but I close, sort of. I really recommend you give this series a look. The quirky, exaggerated southern characters that populate the series will give you a laugh even when faced with a dead body face down in guacamole.

We Wish You a Murderous Christmas (A Year-Round Christmas Mystery #2) by Vicki Delany

Last year, close to this time, we all took a trip to Rudolph, New York, where we met Merry for the first time. I had so much and recommend you all join me in this festive series. Coming November 1st is, We Wish You a Murderous Christmas (A Year-Round Christmas Mystery #2) by Vicki Delany. I was lucky to get an early peek at this, and loved it just as much as the first part.

From the back of the book:

A grinch is spoiling the holiday cheer and causing fear in the latest from the author of Rest Ye Murdered Gentlemen...

It’s Christmastime three hundred sixty-five days a year in Rudolph, New York, and as Christmas Day approaches, shop owner Merry Wilkinson is enjoying a rare evening off at the Yuletide Inn when she runs into owners Grace and Jack Olsen. With Jack's health failing, Merry is relieved to hear that his son Gord will be taking over the day-to-day running of the Inn.

But then Gord reveals that his new plans have no room for Christmas at the Inn, and Merry and the other shopkeepers start to fret about the effect a bland franchise hotel could have on their livelihoods.

When Gord is found stabbed to death, there’s an entire town of potential suspects—and it’s up to Merry to find whoever brought homicide home for the holidays.

My thoughts:

You might recall last time I mentioned the characters, my favorite being Merry's dad. He was back, and still my favorite, though this time Alan gave him a run for the first place in my heart. Santa and the toy maker! I'm such a kid at heart during this season. It was great to see the growth between the characters we met last time. I enjoyed seeing some new faces, and learning about some shocking history.

The mystery was well paced and there were several reasonable suspects. I was totally caught off guard at the reveal. It had a sad feeling hanging over the tension that gave me a sympathy for the killer. I found it so well written and moving. I really look forward to seeing these characters continue to grow together. This is a fabulous series, and one I hope is long lived.

Death at First Sight (Bay Island Psychic Mystery #1) by Lena Gregory

You know it always excites me to see a new series start. I love the fresh slate, as well as getting to know a new location and cast. Death at First Sight (Bay Island Psychic Mystery #1) by Lena Gregory is the first part in what is a promising new series.

From the back of the book:

It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that something’s not right on Bay Island...

Since she left her psychiatric practice in New York City to open up a psychic shop in her hometown on Long Island, Cass Donovan has given her fair share of readings to conflicted customers. But what she sees in Ellie Hawkins’ future doesn’t bode well.

When Ellie’s mother Marge publicly confronts Cass about the reading, the embarrassment makes her want to curl up and die. But when she later stumbles across Marge’s body—and is arrested for her murder—Cass is suddenly the star of Bay Island’s rumor mill.

Out on bail, Cass is determined to prove her innocence and save Ellie from meeting the fate in her unfortunate vision. But even with the help of her friends Bee and Stephanie, Cass will have to channel some serious sleuthing instinct to find the real killer.

My thoughts:

You know I love my para-cozies, that made the theme of this series really exciting for me. In this opening part, more of the focus was on the characters, rather than the psychic aspect. Cass was an interesting heroine, who was easy to relate with, and not a super sleuth. In fact, she was about as effective a I would have been. I liked the dynamic of her two best friends, and feel like I got a solid footing in what the three man characters are all about. I'm super excited to get to know more about Luke in future parts, and maybe more about Cass's shop, I hope.

The mystery was interesting, with a couple of suspects, and I didn't figure it out, In fact, the killer wasn't even on my radar. Considering when and how it struck Cass, I don't feel bad for not knowing. It was paced well, and easy to read. I made it a two afternoon read myself. In the back of the book was an excerpt that let me know the next part is on the way. If you are looking for a promising new series, here is one you should jump into when it releases on Nov 1st.

The Chocolate Falcon Fraud (A Chocoholic Mystery #15) by JoAnna Carl

What's my favorite food? If you've been here a while you know the answer is easy - chocolate. It doesn't matter the time of day, if there is a way to it to a meal or snack, I'm game. So of course when you add it to my other favorite thing, reading mysteries, there is a good chance you have a scored a win. In the case of The Chocolate Falcon Fraud (A Chocoholic Mystery #15) by JoAnna Carl, it is a total win.

From the back of the book:

From the bestselling author of The Chocolate Clown Corpse, it’s murder, my sweet, for a chocolatier whose love of old crime films plunges her into a real-life murder where the motives aren’t so black and white…
The Warner Pier tourism board is kicking off its Tough Guys and Private Eyes film festival with The Maltese Falcon, and Lee Woodyard and her Aunt Nettie are preparing a delicious chocolate noir tie-in at TenHuis Chocolade. What Lee isn’t prepared for is a face from the past: Jeff Godfrey, her former stepson. The last time Jeff showed up in town, he wound up being accused of murder. Now he says he’s only in Warner Pier to see Bogart on the big screen. Honest.

Jeff may now be a college grad, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less naïve than the kid Lee had to bail out of trouble earlier. There are all those strange phone calls, a girlfriend who’s secretly on Jeff’s tail, and a pack of suspicious-sounding acquaintances right out of Dashiell Hammett. Then Jeff goes missing, the Falcon theme is haunting everyone, and a body falls at Lee’s feet when she opens the front door – just like in the movie.

Now Lee is under deadline to rewrite the ending of a cunning killer’s increasingly convincing murder plot.

My thoughts:

You may recall my first dip in this series was in the last part. Not only have I been able to go back and read a lot of parts, I have also loved them all. The characters have become like dear friends, due to the wonderful dialogue and development, especially Lee, I love Lee.

I really enjoyed reading, and studying, The Maltese Falcon in school, and was so impressed with how it was used to enrich this story. The mystery was unique and there was loads of suspense. The layers and depth were so impressive it is worth mentioning again that this was a perfect blend of this story, enhanced with the classic. Plus chocolate. I'm impressed with how intense it was, yet still light and amusing. This is a series I highly recommend.

Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue (Gaslight Mystery #18) by Victoria Thompson

Victoria Thompson is an author that I am always certain I will enjoy, I pick up everything by her I run across, and she never disappoints me. Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue (Gaslight Mystery #18) by Victoria Thompson was another confirmation of why I love her style.

From the back of the book:

The author of Murder on Amsterdam Avenue returns to nineteenth-century New York City to find Christmas in the air, a police detective and a midwife with love in their hearts, and a wealthy newlywed with blood on her hands…

Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt are not the only ones who have recently tied the knot. Family friend Mrs. O’Neill was delighted when her daughter Una wed the seemingly wealthy and charming Randolph Pollock. She didn’t wonder why such an affluent man would want to marry a poor Irish girl, no matter how pretty she was. But now Mrs. O’Neill has a problem.

Pollock’s servants have found their employer bludgeoned to death with Una cradling his body. Rendered mute by the horror of her husband’s death, Una cannot explain what happened, so the police have charged her with murder and locked her away in the Tombs to await trial.

Mrs. O’Neill would like Frank to investigate the case and save Una, yet with Frank and Sarah still on their honeymoon, it’s up to the other members of their newly formed household to do some detective work. But solving the mystery behind Pollock’s death means first discovering the truth about who he really is.

My thoughts:

As with all of the parts in this fantastic series you can read this with no problem, even if you haven't read any of the other parts. This one didn't have my favorites as the focal characters, since they were on their honeymoon, and while I missed them, I enjoyed getting a closer look at some of the other characters. I especially liked seeing more of Felix. There was some really funny dialogue that lightened the mood beautifully. There was also some interesting ideas that set up for future fun.

There were plenty of things revealed that gave me a lot of people to consider. With all that going on, I am happy to say I was able to figure it out, and even figured out the why as well. If you like historical mystery, you really can't go wrong with this series. I have enjoyed every part that I have laid my hands on.

Seeds of Deception (Orchard #10) by Sheila Connolly

I'm happy to welcome you back to the next part of a delicious, long-lived series. Seeds of Deception (Orchard #10) by Sheila Connolly. I had so much when I started this series last year at part nine, that I went back and read many of the past parts to get ready for this one.

From the back of the book:

The New York Times bestselling author of A Gala Event returns with newlyweds Meg and Seth Chapin who should be worried about writing thank you notes, not taking a juicy bite out of crime...

With the bushels of time they spent organizing their wedding, Meg and Seth didn’t have a chance to plan a honeymoon. But now that winter has arrived, there’s not much to do at the orchard. So with their shared love of history and all things apple, they pick Thomas Jefferson’s orchards at Monticello as the perfect getaway.

While they enjoy the beautiful sights, there’s a rotten addition to the agenda when Meg’s parents discover their handyman dead in the backyard. With a bitter police chief eyeing Meg’s father as a suspect, Meg and Seth have to cut their honeymoon short to find the root of the problem.

My thoughts:

Seth and Meg are such a unique couple. This story starts with several chapters that give us a much deeper look into them together as they plan and start out on their honeymoon. There were also a lot of neat informative parts as they traveled and talked.

I liked that this was focused on a few characters, Meg's parents to be more precise. It was neat look at why Meg is the way she is. They sure did have a unique family. It's telling of why her and Seth communicate the way they do with each other.

The mystery had a nice relaxed pacing, there was a general mellow feel to the whole book that made it easy to read. I did not solve it before the reveal. If you want a character driven mystery with unique aspects and lots of interesting tidbits thrown in this will be perfect for you. I look forward to the next part and learning more about everyone.
