I wanted to start with something small in case it didn't work out like I planned so rather than jumping into a rug I decided to make Sam a new cat mat for his box... yes box. He is all cat and loves his box more than any store bought bed we have given him. A few years ago we gave up on it and just let him sleep in a box.
At any rate, to get started you need gather the shirts you need. To make this small mat I used three adult size large shirts. Cut them long-wise in one to two inch pieces, then cut one side so that it is now a long strip rather than a loop.
Next make a small hole in the ends of two of the pieces and loop it through itself pulling it tight. It will now hold itself together. Do this for the remainder of your pieces. For this project I kept the colors separate, so I had three yarn balls to work with.
Now cast on 30 and knit a garter stitch, each color stripe was two rows to form the garter ridge.
Often during the project Sam decided he wanted to help out!
I didn't count rows, just continue in garter stitch until you get the length you want. I was very happy with the feel of it and will be making a bath mat/runner for beside the tub next.
It was a perfect fit for his favorite box.
Sam approves!
I am still working a few other larger projects and I will share them with you when I have progress and decide if I will complete them! Have a great week.
I so wish I could do this, I would love to make a bed for my dog. The beds in the stores are so expensive.
