Just Killing Time by Julianne Holme

I have a new, brand new, get in on the first part, series to tell my cozy fans about! Just Killing Time by Julianne Holmes, is the first in the Clock Shop Mystery series, which promises to be a fast favorite!

From the back of the book:

First in a new cozy series that ticks with excitement and mystery!

Ruth Clagan may be an expert clockmaker, but she’s always had a tendency to lose track of time. And when trying to solve a murder, every minute counts…

Ruth’s beloved grandfather instilled in her a love of timepieces. Unfortunately after her grandmother died and he remarried, Ruth and Grandpa Thom became estranged. She’s wanted to reconnect after her recent divorce, but sadly they’ve run out of time. Her grandfather has been found dead after a break-in at his shop—and the police believe he was murdered.

Now Ruth has been named the heir to Grandpa Thom’s clock shop, the Cog & Sprocket, in the small Berkshire town of Orchard, Massachusetts. As soon as she moves into the small apartment above the shop and begins tackling the heaps of unfinished work, Ruth finds herself trying to stay on the good side of Grandpa’s bossy gray cat, Bezel, while avoiding the step-grandmother she never wanted. But as old secrets and grudges start to surface, Ruth will have to kick into high gear to solve the killer case before someone else winds up dead…

My thought:

You know I read a lot of mysteries, so for me to say this was an original setting really says something. I do believe the was my first clock shop, and thanks to immersive writing, I really got to experience it fully. I've also never been to Massachusetts but I sure feel like I have now. I just love when an author is able to take me away like that.

One of my favorite parts about a first part is you really get to see a character for what they are, the motivations , flaws and strengths all grow before your eyes, and usually a romance does as well, as is the case here.

In this rich world, with it's well written characters, is a mystery and it's a mystery that is also well written; the twists are plotted and paced masterfully. I was really surprised just how good this first part was on all levels. I am so, super excited for the next part and I know you will be too!

Take some time to browse the other great mysteries available from Berkley Prime Crime. While you are there, you can sign up for the newsletter so you never miss a new release. I must warn you though, after browsing my wish list is longer than I could probably read. You can also connect with them on Twitter where you can happen across a fun giveaway as well.
