A Gala Event by Sheila Connolly

I literally eat an apple a day so the title, A Gala Event by Sheila Connolly, really caught my attention. It is the ninth part in Orchard Mystery series, which features the adorable couple Seth and Meg.

From the back of the book:

Wedding bells are ringing for Meg and Seth in the latest Orchard Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Picked to Die…

The fall harvest may be just about over, but orchard owner Meg Corey is busier than ever planning her wedding to Seth Chapin. Who knew picking apples would be less work than picking out rings and a dress? And even though the happy couple has invited most of Granford, Massachusetts, to the ceremony, they might have to make room for one more guest…

Ex-con Aaron Eastman has unexpectedly reappeared in his hometown, searching for answers to the tragic fire in his family’s past that put him behind bars twenty-five years ago. Moved by his sincerity, Meg vows to do everything she can to help him solve the cold case. As she cobbles together the clues, it becomes increasingly clear that Aaron may have been considered the bad seed of the family, but someone else was one bad apple…

My thoughts:

I really enjoy it when the murder mystery in a cozy is a cold case. At first, with the way Aaron entered, I didn't think that would be the case and I figured Gail would be in hot water as a suspect. I was pleased when the story twisted.

I really liked Meg and Seth, this was my first time reading the series and I felt right at home with them. It was pretty exciting to jump in during such a happy time. Poor Meg, bless her, planning a wedding and solving a murder!

I really enjoyed how the story was plotted and paced. The setting was nice and cozy although the characters were really what made it. It was filled with such rich characters that I look forward to seeing again in future installments. I will also be going back to see how it all started.

If you are looking for well written mystery that will hold you from start to finish, I recommend you give A Gala Event a read.

  1. I discovered this series of books quite by accident but have read from the beginning. I enjoy the characters and plots. I enjoy the mystery without the gore. One thing that I don't like is that Connolly seems to purposely be obscure with details surrounding the person who ultimately committed the crime. At least it seems that way in the last few books. You will be down to the last few pages when all of the sudden she will throw out a killer on a silver platter. While I don't enjoy figuring out who did it by the third chapter, I do wish she gave the reader a little more to contemplate.
