Death of a Bad Apple by Penny Pike

You know how I love my food themed cozies. I fell totally in love with the characters in the Food Festival Mystery series by Penny Pike and was absolutely thrilled to see the next part was available. I grabbed my copy and devoured Death of a Bad Apple in one night!

From the back of the book:

The latest deliciously appealing mystery from the author of Death of a Chocolate Cheater...

Anxious to take a break from bustling San Francisco, Darcy and her Aunt Abby pack up the food truck and head for the apple festival at Apple Valley, California. Aunt Abby is sure her almond apple tarts will be a hit and Darcy wants to collect more recipes for her food truck cookbook.

But when a fellow guest at the Enchanted Apple Inn is pared-down—and the Inn’s owner ends up the prime suspect—Darcy must peel away the layers of the mystery. Because an apple a day certainly isn’t keeping the killer away...

My thoughts:

First, I have to say this was just like having a visit with old friends. Darcy, Aunt Abby, Dillon and Jake are all such sweet, charming people. I also really enjoyed meeting the new people of Apple Valley.

There were actually two murders to solve and it was pretty tense considering, even with the festival going on. I may never go in a hay maze again... ever. The killer was on my radar but I didn't have anyone pinned down before the reveal. I liked that the mystery was wrapped deeply in a bigger story that made it very poignant.

Penny Pike always delivers with a satisfying mystery, in charming setting, with lovable characters. This time was no different. I even felt a bond with the killer, which was interesting. I really look forward to seeing the next part and recommend you jump into this delicious series. As a bonus, you will find some lovely apple themed recipes in the back of the book too.

Take some time to browse the other great mysteries available from Berkley Prime Crime. While you are there, you can sign up for the newsletter so you never miss a new release. I must warn you though, after browsing my wish list is longer than I could probably read. You can also connect with them on Twitter where you can happen across a fun giveaway as well.
