Sweet Pepper Hero (Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mystery #4) by J.J. Cook

I know you have heard me mention J.J. Cook before. As I have raved before, I am here to rave again. Sweet Pepper Hero (Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mystery #4) by J.J. Cook was just so much fun to read. It has all of the elements I love in cozy and also blends so many of my favorite themes seamlessly together.

From the Back of the book:

Old rivalries heat up in the fourth Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade mystery from the national bestselling author of In Hot Water.

Fire chief Stella Griffin has been put in charge of judging the annual recipe contest, but Eric—her resident ghost and true culinary genius—has vanished. Before she can track down his latest haunt, she’s called in to investigate a local moonshine distillery that was set ablaze, making her realize there’s more than pies and cakes cooking in Sweet Pepper.

As rumors of a revived whiskey war ignite, Stella turns to the town’s elders to help her find answers. The past might have some clues as to what has sparked the present fires. But when following a lead lands her in buried rubble, Stella realizes she must extinguish this case fast or she might be going down in flames.

My thoughts:

This was such a charming read. The characters were all so sweet, even the ghosts! Well, most of the ghosts. I especially loved Eric and Stella; they have such sweet interactions. This story has a lot going on, from the fires to solve, the missing ghost to find, and the cooking to be handled. It seems to be centered around a bit of a moonshine rivalry and is pretty exciting to read.

I loved the dogs and the way they had their own story. This cozy crossed a lot of genre lines with it having it's food theme, firehouse theme, some animal theme, and, my favorite, a paranormal theme. I didn't solve the mystery but I had so much fun trying.

I jumped in the series at this part and it was free standing with no need to read any prior parts to enjoy this one. In the back you will find pepper tips as well as recipes.
