A Disguise to Die For (Costume Shop Mystery #1) by Diane Vallere

When I first saw A Disguise to Die For (Costume Shop Mystery #1) by Diane Vallere in my reading stack, I was thinking, oh another Material Witness part, which is a series by Diane Vallere that I adore, but then I realized it was brand new series and squealed with delight! I love starting a new series at the beginning, especially when it is an author that I already know I love!

From the back of the book:

Someone is dressed to kill in the debut Costume Shop Mystery from the national bestselling author of the Material Witness mysteries.

No sooner does former magician’s assistant Margo Tamblyn return home to Proper City, Nevada, to run Disguise DeLimit, the family-owned costume shop, than she gets her first big order. Wealthy nuisance Blitz Manners needs forty costumes for a detective-themed birthday bash. As for Blitz himself, his Sherlock Holmes is to-die-for—literally—when, in the middle of the festivities, Margo’s friend and party planner Ebony Welles is caught brandishing a bloody carving knife over a very dead Blitz.

For Margo, clearing Ebony’s name is anything but elementary, especially after Ebony flees town. Now Margo is left to play real-life detective in a town full of masked motives, cloaked secrets, and veiled vendettas. But as she soon learns, even a killer disguise can't hide a murderer in plain sight for long.

My thoughts:

It's no secret I love to dress up. I would totally fit in at the costume shop and was a little sad that I didn't get to go the costume birthday party. I love the idea of dressing up as detectives. I have even made a crocheted deerstalker hat that would have been perfect! As I expected, the characters were so well developed and all behaved in a real, logical way that made this story come to life.

The mystery was twisty, turny, and had enough suspects to keep me guessing. I guessed wrong, I'll admit that, it happens, but the suspect made sense and I was satisfied. The climax was dramatic and intense, just like I love them. This is cozy done right.

You need to get this now, start at the start with me, and fall in love with Diane Vallere's ability to craft a mystery. I do also recommend you head off and grab both parts of her Material Witness series, as well. In the back of this book you will find recipes and costume ideas, plus a teaser for the next part! Yay!
