My Sunshine Away by M.O. Walsh

Every once in a while I run across a story that catches me off guard and takes my breath away. My Sunshine Away by M.O. Walsh, now available in paperback, is a beautiful coming of age story, with page turning tension that makes this both fast paced, as well as something be savored.

From the back of the book:

"It was the summer everything changed...."

"My Sunshine Away" unfolds in a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom. But in the summer of 1989, when fifteen-year-old Lindy Simpson--free spirit, track star, and belle of the block--experiences a horrible crime late one evening near her home, it becomes apparent that this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia has a dark side, too.

In "My Sunshine Away," M.O. Walsh brilliantly juxtaposes the enchantment of a charmed childhood with the gripping story of a violent crime, unraveling families, and consuming adolescent love. Acutely wise and deeply honest, it is an astonishing and page-turning debut about the meaning of family, the power of memory, and our ability to forgive.

My thoughts:

This story is so beautifully done; I was made to feel both deep regret and uplifting hope. While it is the story of a particular area and time, it is excited in a way that makes it a timeless story about humanity, in both its darkness and its light.

Being a mystery fan, as you well know, I did really enjoy that element of the story as well. I also happen to love the area where it took place and enjoyed hearing such a detailed history. I was really able sink into the setting. If you are looking a rich coming of age tale, I recommend this one.

Take some time to browse the other great mysteries available from Berkley Prime Crime. While you are there, you can sign up for the newsletter so you never miss a new release. I must warn you though, after browsing my wish list is longer than I could probably read. You can also connect with them on Twitter where you can happen across a fun giveaway as well.
