Catch as Cat Can (Sunny & Shadow Mystery #5) by Claire Donally

You know I love my cozies with cats. Shadow is one of my favorites, by far, because of the unique presentation. I was just thrilled to see Catch as Cat Can (Sunny & Shadow Mystery #5) by Claire Donally in my reading stack, and bumped it to the top.

From the back of the book:

The new Sunny and Shadow mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Hiss and Tell and Last Licks.

When a new seafood shop opens in Kittery Harbor, Maine, Sunny’s tomcat Shadow is on the hunt for tasty treats—until Sunny discovers a cold-blooded killer’s catch of the day.

Neil Garret is new to town, but his seafood shop is already going belly up. Working next door, former reporter Sunny Coolidge can’t help noticing the telltale signs. But checking on Neil one morning reveals something far worse for business than a lack of inventory—a mysterious man lies murdered in his freezer.

Sunny’s boyfriend, Chief Investigator Will Price, nets Neil as the prime suspect. But even when Sunny learns about Neil’s secret past, the open-and-shut case seems fishy. Now it’s up to Sunny to find the real culprit and get Neil off the hook.

My thoughts:

First, as I mentioned, Shadow is just done so well and so different to how pets are often presented. I love the way he views the world and can imagine that is how my cats, and many cats, would see our behaviors and things we use. It's wonderfully clever and insightful. Of course, his human Sunny is also fabulous and her Dad and boyfriend round out my favorites. As usual, even the supporting cast were fun to know.

The setting was described in a way that brought it to life and helped me immerse into the story and the bitter cold of the weather. The mystery was a neat one too, with some secrets that needed revealed in order to get on the right track. Neil's secret past adds an interesting level to the danger and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the suspects and clues with Sunny and Shadow on this one. The reveal was tense and fun and surprised me. I love this series and recommend to jump in now!
