Whatcha Knittin' Kitten

Ladies I am embarking on a new journey! I've never thought of myself as crafty or artsy in any way but I do love to cross-stitch. So when I was trying to think of something new to learn I was already leaning toward a needle craft.

Practice of a garter stitch

Being a lady who likes choices, I grabbed a kit for knitting and for crochet - just in case. Of course I also grabbed some pretty pink yarn. Then I knitted and knitted, the same stitch over and over. With little to no consistency because the needles just felt foreign in my hands.

More garter stitch, over and over!

Finally the stitches started to look the same, so I learned the purl and and set off to find an easy fast pattern to try. I cast on 20 and started making a headband using what they called a cabbage stitch, which is just the knit stitch with an extra wrap.

Cast on!

It was only supposed to take an hour or so but it took me a few nights. After I had a long enough band, measure your head and take off an inch or two, I cast on 26 and made a smaller piece to form the bow, and then 6 more to make the little piece to hold it together.

Looking good!

I must say when it was done and actually looked like it was supposed to I felt an immense amount of pride.

Isn't it pretty?

For me personally it will do just fine but I should say that this stitch is a bit too stretchy for a headband. I started one for my grand daughter that will use the same pieces but it will be all garter stitch so that it stretches but not so much.

I love the big bow!

While working on the headbands for my daughter and grand daughter I will also be working on a pretty pink camo hat too!

Pretty Pretty!

I'll update you next week on my adventures in novice knitting! Have a lovely week!

  1. How cute! I use to crochet and loved it but never had anyone teach me to knit and I know I would have loved to do this. I made tons of the cutest baby afghans when I did crochet.

  3. Aw, this turned out really cute. I love the color! I think it's the same color I used for my many many square baby blankets :)

  6. That is so pretty. I would love to learn to knit and wasn't sure of just buying a kit and teaching myself. I'm thinking of going and grabbing one and trying.
