A Dark and Stormy Murder (A Writer's Apprentice Mystery #1) by Julia Buckley

You all know I am always so excited when I see a new series to try. July 7th you can get your hands on a brand new series! A Dark and Stormy Murder (A Writer's Apprentice Mystery #1) by Julia Buckley is a charming start to a promising series with a fun theme.

From the back of the book:

An aspiring suspense novelist lands in the middle of a real crime, in the first in a captivating new series by the author of the Undercover Dish Mysteries.

Lena London's literary dreams are coming true—as long as she can avoid any real-life villains...

Camilla Graham’s bestselling suspense novels inspired Lena London to become a writer, so when she lands a job as Camilla’s new assistant, she can’t believe her luck. Not only will she help her idol craft an enchanting new mystery, she’ll get to live rent-free in Camilla’s gorgeous Victorian home in the quaint town of Blue Lake, Indiana.

But Lena’s fortune soon changes for the worse. First, she lands in the center of small town gossip for befriending the local recluse. Then, she stumbles across one thing that a Camilla Graham novel is never without—a dead body, found on her new boss’s lakefront property.

Now Lena must take a page out of one of Camilla’s books to hunt down clues in a real crime that seems to be connected to the novelist’s mysterious estate—before the killer writes them both out of the story for good.

My thoughts:

I knew I was going to enjoy this from the premise. I've never herd of writers working together in such an intimate way. I really loved the dynamic between the two women. It was charming and has such room for deepening. Of course there were some romantic interests as well, I love that aspect of cozies. Sam won my heart almost instantly, even when he was being gruff. The setting was quaint and so rich in detail I could imagine being there. I especially loved the house.

The mystery was fabulous and had depth. I did guess who it might be, and say might because I still hadn't settled but was considering the right person. I'll take that as a win. I think it is solvable if you have good intuition. I also liked that there is another mystery in the series ones that seems like it will unfold more slowly as things move along. I can't wait to read more and find out what adventures await for these wonderful characters. I know we are going to be best friends.

Take some time to browse the other great mysteries available from Berkley Prime Crime. While you are there, you can sign up for the newsletter so you never miss a new release. I must warn you though, after browsing my wish list is longer than I could probably read. You can also connect with them on Twitter where you can happen across a fun giveaway as well.
