Jenn McKinlay remains one of my very favorite cozy authors. I have never been disappointed by her, and I have read every single book by her as soon as it was avaliable. When, Assault & Beret (Hat Shop Mystery #5) by Jenn McKinlay, hit my reading stack it didn't even sit there a whole day.
From the back of the book:
Allons-y to Paris for more hats and homicide from the New York Times bestselling author of Copy Cap Murder!
London milliner Vivian Tremont and her American cousin and partner, Scarlett Parker, tip their caps to their beloved shop on Portobello Road in Notting Hill and set off for Paris, where Viv can’t wait to teach a hat-making class. But she has another reason to travel to the City of Light: to find the man she impulsively eloped with years ago and have their marriage annulled.
William Graham is not only handsome and charming, but he also has a glamorous job as an insurance investigator who works with priceless pieces of art, most recently a small Renoir that has been discovered in a junk shop. But when both Will and the masterpiece suddenly disappear, it’s up to the ladies from London to follow the trail of clues. They’ll need to hold on to their chapeaux, however, because someone is a master in the art of deception.
My thoughts:
I had a blast with Vivian and Scarlett as they ventured to Paris. I told you last time how much I related to Scarlett and that was still true. It was like seeing an old friend, and this time we got to go to a new place. Jenn McKinlay has a way of creating characters that I care about and that amuse me. Even the secondary characters here were awesome. I really had fun with Harry.
They mysteries were fun and paced perfectly. As usual I loved the tone. There is a natural wit to this author's voice that lightens in the right places and lets up in tense places. She has a very deft pen. The reveal as usual was gripping and surprising. I will be keeping my eyes out for the next part. Grab this one and any you see by Jenn McKinlay, you really can't go wrong with her.
Take some time to browse the other great mysteries available from Berkley Prime Crime. While you are there, you can sign up for the newsletter so you never miss a new release. I must warn you though, after browsing my wish list is longer than I could probably read. You can also connect with them on Twitter where you can happen across a fun giveaway as well.
